"Soul Salvation" Ruthie Foster (band) Paul Thorn (solo)

Genre: Roots Rock , Singer-songwriter , Soul

  1. Saturday, February 04 8:00 PM (All ages)

RSVP ON FACEBOOK

One black, one white.  One from Texas, one from Mississippi.  One woman (with her band), and one man (solo).  Both raised in the church.  Both steeped in the tradition of American music, and both putting their own contemporary twists on it – blending blues, rock, gospel, folk, R&B, and country music.  Most importantly, both have a whole lotta soul!

ABOUT RUTHIE:

Those who have followed Ruthie Foster’s eclectic musical history know that she can burn down any stage with her combustible blend of soul, blues, rock, folk and gospel. And when Grammy Award-winning producer John Chelew suggested she record an album in New Orleans — with support handpicked from the Crescent City’s overflowing pool of talent — it was an opportunity for Ruthie to infuse fresh spices into her already rich sonic gumbo. The result is Let It Burn, a recording that smolders, sizzles and ignites with an intensity born from her vibrant voice and indelible presence. www.ruthiefoster.com/

ABOUT PAUL:

Paul Thorn’s “gruff voice has gotten him compared to Springsteen and Tom Waits.  But when he sits down to write, he’s more like John Prine.” –Newark Star Ledger

Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, raised among the same spirits (and some of the actual people) who nurtured the young Elvis generations before, Thorn has rambled down back roads and jumped out of airplanes, worked for years in a furniture factory, battled four-time world champion boxer Roberto Durán on national television, signed with and been dropped by a major label, opened for Bonnie Raitt, Mark Knopfler and John Prine among many other headliners, and made some of the most emotionally restless yet fully accessible music of our time.

Anokye:

To see Yaw Amponsah play drums is to see a master at work. Coming from a musical family from West Africa he is at home in the world of rhythm. He makes very difficult rhythms seem very easy. A versatile player he can play many styles of music from Ghana including Palmwine, Highlife, Odonson, Dagbani, Agbacha, and Kpanlogo. Also he knows how to play djembe music of Mali and Guinea, and even beats of popular Congolese music.

His speciality is the music of the multi-part percussion ensembles of the Asante (Ashanti) people. These sets of drums and corresponding rhythms can be made up of as many as eight independent percussion parts, sometimes even more. These are the drums and beats known as Kete, Fontonfrom, Adowa, and Akom. Not only does Yaw know the individual parts that make up these powerful grooves, but he is a master drummer and knows the traditional talking drum language and proverbs that accompany each style of drumming.

An incredible traditional African musician, he has also played other styles of music as well and has worked his drumming into Hip Hop, Rock, and Electronic music recordings. One interesting project he was involved in was making innovative sound installation recordings to accompany pieces from the Seattle Art Museum's collection of African art. He translated traditional proverbs from Twi into English and recited them in rhythm over Kete, Akom, Adowa, and Fontonfrom beats. Two selections of this work are presented here at funketabla, "Sankofa," for a sankofa bird, and "Circular Rainbow," for an Asante stool. These pieces not only illustrate something about the cultural depth of those art objects, but help to convey some of the levels and depth of Asante drumming as well.

From our Press Release:

The goal of this weekly is to foster a sense of community in the World music scene here in Seattle and to offer a weekly gathering place for those involved in or fans of World music in the region.  We believe that Seattle has a thriving World community and are excited to bring the Musicquarium into the fold.  The Triple Door itself has long-since been an avid supporter of African music, culminating in King Sunny (& his African Beats) joining with KEXP last June to deliver the very first live-radio broadcast from our stage, a smashing success.

Often AFROCENTRIC will partner up with appropriate Triple Door main stage acts to offer a pre and post lounge component to the evening. The first such event took place on Tuesday, March 16th with Bassekou Kouyate in conjunction with his, and the very first, release on Sub Pop’s new imprint “Next Ambiance,” a world-focused label that takes its name as a transmutation of Jon Kertzer’s pioneering show on KEXP, “Best Ambiance.”

About Message From Guinea:

United in their passion for sharing their culture on a global level, Message From Guinea is a group of extraordinary Seattle-based West African artists who have come together to spread a message of joy, unity, and transformation.   Employing powerful rhythms, hi-energy dances, and melodic songs steeped in the rich cultural heritage of their home country of Guinea, West Africa, Message From Guinea opens hearts, ignites passion, and enlivens audiences. These formidable artists grew up living their musical tradition, as Guinea is one of the few places left in Africa where indigenous drumming and dance traditions are still woven into everyday life.

They began dancing competitively as children, received training from cultural luminaries such as Kemoko Sano, and grew into artists of the highest caliber, touring the world with top companies such as the internationally-renowned Les Ballets Africains, Guinea’s national company.  Their authenticity is evident in their art.

Guinea is the birthplace of many African percussive instruments, including the increasingly popular djembe from the Mande region, and the krin, or “African telephone” from Guinea’s forest region.  These instruments have historically served the role of calling people together for important occasions- births, deaths, planting and harvesting of crops, the arrival of kings, the initiation of battle and the launch of the hunt.  Message From Guinea fuses sacred tradition with modern sensibility; with virtuosity and charisma, they call their audience to join in the essence of Guinea’s cultural legacy.
